逆寫流行樂的blur-文by黃瀚民

如今一切水到渠成，blur終於在這張最新專輯中徹底背離以往專輯的命運：英倫人物預言。
他們正如那封面上的男子，收起遠挑的視野，把目光重新落在自己的身上，企圖用更巨觀
的音樂野心去玩這場搖滾遊戲;望著他們漸行遠去的背影，我們看到的，已經不是當年
NME刊頭上的明星，而是勇敢逆寫流行的音樂人。

1990年10月13日，英國老牌的流行音樂週刊NME以Seeing Starsx歷史宣告式的聳動標題，
大剌剌地介紹一個來自英國Colchester市，沒沒無聞的新樂團blur，並在該期大篇爐報導
他們發行首支單曲"She's So Hight"的消息，一切彷彿煞有介事般隆重。

當然，對英國音樂媒體澎風習性略有了解的人，並不會因此而對這個樂團萌生太大的興奮
與期待;事實上，這個樂團在半年前才被『food』唱片公司以8萬英鎊的價格簽下，團名從
柪口又不討喜的seymour改成比較順口的blur，在唱片公司的企劃中他們與jesus jones同
款式的系列產品。當時blur，只是趕搭madchester流行風潮最末的一班車，躲在stone roses
這些巨星神像蔽陰下，唱片公司力捧的一個流行樂團罷了。

誰知道呢？十年的時間可以怎樣低改變這個世界，還有這個世界的人們。當時序跳入
1999年的四月，你手上握著的已經是blur的第六章專輯『13』，在仿LP設計的包裝與精巧
的封面上，你看到的是吉他手Graham Coxon繪製地衣服男性人像：赤裸、削瘦、低垂著頭
似乎在沉思或是檢視著什麼。

過去幾年來，blur連續以『Modern Life Is Rubbish』、『Parklife』、『The Great Escape』
三張專輯回應了英國式吉他搖滾的菁華，同時將命題鎖定英倫眾生的浮世繪，用一種四格
漫畫的捉狹趣味去摹寫他們的觀察下的社會現實，也兼得了主流媒體與商業成績上的雙贏。
正當oasis間的戰爭進入最高潮時，他們選擇在第五張同名專輯做出音樂方向的改變，轉向
美式低傳真搖滾美學取經。其後的一連串動作更預告了他們打算一去不回頭的決心：首先
是發行混音專輯『Bustin'+Dronin』，在Thurston Moore、Adrian Sherwood、John McEntire
等樂界大儒的聯合出手下，沖淡了他們身上流行明星的銅臭;接著主唱Damon Albarn又在
『小山田圭吾』的混音專輯『FM』中插花獻藝;去年夏天，他們甚至跟Silver Apples（註1）
同台演出。如今一切水到渠成，blur終於在這張最新專輯中徹底背離以往專輯的命題:英倫
人物寓言。他們正如那封面上的男子，收起了遠眺的視野，把目光重新落在自己身上，企
圖用更巨觀的音樂野心去玩這場搖滾樂遊戲。

主唱Damon Albarn在這張專輯開始大量地談他自己，或說得更精確一點，新專輯是他與他
前女友Justine Frischmann間感情破裂之後心理創傷的治療日記。在"No Distance Left To Run "
這首歌裡，他喃喃地唱道：『一切都結束了/......當我們再相遇/......請轉身離去/我不像在見到
你......』類似的歌詞或主題在專輯中的"1992"、"Trailerpark"、"Caramel "、"Trimm Trabb "
等曲中皆大量供應，看來我們可以靜待Justine小姐在Elastica的新專輯中有何回應了。

不管文字主題的轉變如何，音樂野心的展現才是這張專輯應該注目的焦點，首先他們撤換了
合作八年的製作人Stephen Street(註2)，改由William Orbit操刀製作，這位"怪腳"從80年代
初組三人樂團Torch Song 的流行電子路線（近Eurythmics）起家，到一連三張『』

曾於1995年獨領風騷奪得全英音樂獎年度最佳專輯、最佳團體、最佳單曲、最佳音樂錄影帶等大獎的90年代最具代表性英國樂團Blur，自90年代中期英國樂團勢力極為強盛的時期，不論在音樂風格或演奏技巧都極獲好評，在銷售成績獲支持度的表現也都非常耀眼，而他們直接承襲了英國搖滾樂前輩樂團My Bloody Valentine、Stone Roses、Sex Pistol甚至Beatles的血脈，加上獨樹一幟的風格，使Blur成為當今最成功的Brit-pop樂團之一。

Blur由4位個性格鮮明、各有專精的團員Damon Albarn（主唱兼吉他手）、Graham Coxon（吉他手）、Dave Rowntree（鼓手）與Alex James（貝斯手）所組成，出道以來就分別擁有死忠的樂迷忠實支持。Damon十三歲時認識了Blur的吉他手Graham Coxon，兩人一拍即合，成為非常要好的朋友。完成中學學業之後Damon搬回倫敦就讀演藝學院，就讀演藝學院一年之後，Damon發現到自己並沒有辦法成為一名偉大的演員，於是放棄學業在倫敦一家餐廳打工。在這個時候，Damon和Graham以及其他的幾個朋友組了一個名為Circus的樂團，開始了他的樂團生涯。隨後的期間其他的成員離去之後，後來兩人找來Blur現在的鼓手Dave Rowntree及貝司手Alex James並將原本的團名Circus改為Seymour，這就是現在獨領英國Brit-Pop風騷的Blur的前身。

Seymour組成之後在倫敦相當受歡迎並引起唱片公司的注意，在1990年他們改名為Blur並發行第一支單曲She's So High，但並沒有多少人注意到他們，直到他們的第二首單曲There's No Other Way的推出在英國流行音樂界丟下一顆炸彈引起一陣震撼，立即登上英國排行榜首並蟬聯數週之久。而Blur接著在1991年8月發行首張專輯Leisure，其中包括She's So High、There's No Other Way以及Bang三首單曲。Leisure推出之後，英國極具指標性的Q雜誌給予其四顆星的高評價，同時也在Q雜誌1991年年度最佳五十張專輯之列。以一個初出茅廬的新團體而言，首張專輯就有如此耀眼的成績的確不凡，但也證明Blur的音樂確有其獨特之處。

Blur於1992年3月推出單曲Popscene，在這首歌之中可以明顯地看到Blur的轉變。Punk式的吉他和管樂的搭配堪稱一絕，Damon也極力跳出Beatles式的合音方式。1993年5月Blur推出他們的第二張專輯Modern Life Is Rubbish，這張專輯名稱靈感來自於倫敦一面極富盛名的牆上的塗鴉，本專輯在英國專輯榜上排名十五並且分別獲Q雜誌及NME雜誌選為年度最佳五十張專輯之一。

1994年4月Blur發行其冠軍專輯Parklife。這張專即由曾為The Smiths、Morrissey和The Cranberry等知名巨星製作專輯的傳奇性人物Stephen Street親自操刀製作。專輯中包括Girls ＆ Boys、To The End、Parklife以及End Of A Country四首單曲，而其中的前三首均為冠軍曲。英國知名雜誌如Q、NME、Spin、Rolling Stone等均給予極高的評價。這張專輯也徹底改變整個英國青少年的文化，影響極為深遠，在這同時英國所謂的Brit-Pop新浪潮也隨之展開。而Blur與另一樂團Oasis之間的競爭在媒體炒作之下也顯得十分熱烈，甚至有歌迷互相對立的情形出現。儘管競爭激烈，卻彷彿對整個英國流行樂界注入一股新的活力。

繼Parklife之後，1995年9月Blur再度推出新專輯The Great Escape。本專輯延續前一張專輯的魅力，發行首週就擠入排行榜冠軍席次，其中包括有Country House、The Universal、Syereotypes和Charmless Man四首暢銷單曲，專輯銷售量亦十分驚人，本專輯僅在英國本地即突破一百萬銷售量的輝煌記錄。1997年2月Blur推出同名專輯Blur，本張專輯甫一發行就立刻獲得廣大樂迷的支持，迅速竄升至英國排行榜首位，在這張同名專輯之中收錄有四首暢銷單曲，分別為：Beetlebum、Song 2、On Your Own以及M.O.R.。

1999年Blur發行了名稱為13的專輯，依舊維持Blur過去一貫的Brit-Pop風格，卻顯得更加內斂穩重。。這張專輯同時亦請來剛為國際天后大姐大Madonna製作新專輯的大師級製作人Williams Orbit親自操刀製作，果然不同凡響，展現出Blur更為洗鍊的一面。在成軍十年的同時，專輯中融合了這十年先後的不同類型，在經過Blur獨特的處理之後，更顯兼容並蓄。首支單曲Tender對於聽眾朋友們或許有些突兀，融合了民謠、Lo-Fi、福音等極為美式的風格，由Damon一貫的吊兒郎噹似的歌喉中唱出卻顯得有種異樣的協調感。

2000年11月2日Blur意義別具地發行了輯結樂史6張專輯17支單曲作品的首張豪華全紀錄精選大輯，及1支樂迷引頸企盼的全新創作單曲Music Is My Radar，精選輯封面更特別邀請英國當代知名藝術家Julian Opie為團員彩繪肖像，為他們10年奮鬥豐碩有成的結果紀錄。雖然英國Brit-pop音樂界新秀後進不斷進出樂壇，始終屹立不搖的Blur仍按照自己的步調創作出Blur風格的音樂作品，這張精選大碟更讓歌迷們細細品嚐Blur的蛻變與堅持。
